This wide-angle zoom was designed for full-frame DSLRs but is compatible with crop-sensor cameras, where it provides a 17.6 to 38.4mm focal length. Its constant f/4 aperture has nine rounded blades and offers low light performance and creamy bokeh.
The lens consists of 16 elements in 11 groups. One super-ultra-low-dispersion element and one ultra-low dispersion element minimize chromatic aberrations, and four aspherical elements take care of distortions. All components are coated with Canon’s Subwavelength and Air Sphere coatings to eliminate ghosting and flare, ensuring that each image is color correct and sharp. The front and rear lens elements are treated with fluorine, which keeps fingerprints and smudges at bay.
Autofocus is quick, quiet, and accurate due to Canon’s ring-type ultrasonic motor, internal focusing, high-speed CPU, and autofocus algorithms. Full-time manual focus override is just as fast. Like all L-Series lenses, this one is weather-sealed and able to perform in unfriendly conditions. It has a 126° 5-inch to 84° angle of view, a maximum magnification of 0.16x, a minimum focusing distance of 11.02 inches, and accepts rear gel filters.
