The EOS 70D is the predecessor of the EOS 80D. This DSLR features a 20.2-megapixel APS-C Dual Pixel CMOS, Canon’s signature sensor, which assigns two photodiodes per pixel, allowing this camera to capture more light. However, if you ever need a flash, the built-in hot shoe makes it easy.

The DIGIC 5+ Image Processor, a powerhouse with 14-bit processing power, provides noise reduction and even minimizes chromatic aberrations. And you’ll be able to capture images in a variety of lighting conditions with a native ISO range of 100–12800, which is extendable up to 25600. This camera is fast, too—up to 7 fps.

With a 19-point phase-detection autofocus system, you can be sure that your images will always be sharp and clear. If you use an f/2.8 or faster lens, the center point becomes a dual cross-type autofocus point. Choose between one-shot autofocus, AI Servo (best for moving subjects), or AI Focus, which is a hybrid of one shot and AI servo, and locks on to your subject if it begins moving once in focus. Manual focus is always a toggle away if you prefer to use your lens ring.

Compose images through the 3.0-inch 1,040k-dot vari-angle touchscreen LCD monitor, which features live view, or the eye-level pentaprism viewfinder, which provides 97 percent coverage.

This camera takes terrific video as well, in full 1080p HD at 30 fps and in 720p at up to 60 fps. It’s easy to connect an external microphone via the 3.5mm port, and you can export files through the HDMI mini port. Shoot your videos in MOV or MPEG-4 AVC/H.264.

Construction is sturdy, although you should note that this camera is not weather sealed. In addition to the 3.5mm and HDMI mini port, there is also a USB 2.0 port, and one memory card slot for SD, SDHC, or SDXC cards. Files are stored as either JPEG or RAW, and you’ll get up to 920 shots per charge of the Canon LP-E6 battery. Built-in WiFi makes it easy to share your photos, and the Canon EOS 70D is compatible with any Canon EF or EF-S lens.
